Firat Tanis in Once Upon a Time in Anatolia
One of those mysteriously overpraised Cannes titles that reveals a massive disconnect between critical interest and popular satisfaction, Nuri Bilge Ceylan's dull-as-dirt police procedural spends nearly an hour driving through the low-lit Turkish countryside looking for a corpse. Officers pass the time with sub-Tarantino banter, jawing their way toward a delayed revelation that says nothing new about the nature of crime. Like Romania's bottom-heavy Police, Adjective, this requires way too much from its audience for a payback that's unsatisfying.—JR
