Be psyched: The Jim Jarmusch of exquisitely cool slow-burners like Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai is back, after a lengthy pretentious phase that worried us. His latest is about vampires—thankfully not of the teenage kind, but embodied by the effortlessly cool Tilda Swinton and her centuries-long partner in bloodsucking, Tom Hiddleston (best known for his wryly villainous Loki in The Avengers). Occasionally neurotic and always nostalgic, these are hipster monsters, embodying a smart spin on the formula that invigorates genre and filmmaker alike. Our fashionable nightcrawlers come together in a desiccated Detroit house filled with ancient electric guitars; the movie itself feels like a lovely, forlorn antique. It’s intended for vinyl hoarders who stay up all night remembering the good old days—i.e., Jarmusch’s most intimate fans—and you’d better believe that’s us. Click for showtimes.—Joshua Rothkopf
