New York Film Festival 2012: The Paperboy

By now you’ve undoubtedly heard about the scene in which Nicole Kidman’s Southern hussy urinates on Zac Efron—to be fair, he had been stung by a jellyfish—and that Lee Daniels’s follow-up to Precious is already being touted as a nouveau camp classic. What you might not have heard is that this adaptation of Pete Dexter’s pulp novel is less a so-bad-it’s-great pleasure than the cinematic equivalent of the Hindenburg crash, and that no amount of Matthew McConaughey daringness, drag-queen-ready dialogue or shots of Efron in his tighty-whities can save this movie from its own incoherence. This is trash cinema pitched at a stratospheric level of kitsch, but before you misinterpret that, know that it’s still trash.—David Fear
