Michiel (Lakemeier), a 13-year-old in Nazi-occupied Holland, passes the days by playing in the charred wreckage of a downed British warplane. But when he discovers a wounded paratrooper (Bower) hiding in the woods, he hatches an exit strategy---even as his dad (Thiry), the town mayor, befriends the enemy in order to protect the locals. Coming of age behind enemy lines in WWII: Teen angst has rarely seemed so geopolitical. Blotting out broader hardships to underscore a single youngster's paternal-patriotic anxieties might feel like burying the lead, but director Martin Koolhoven's straightforward sentimentality strikes a nice balance, offering a fresh twist on a familiar fog-of-war story.
