'The Rite of Spring', Stravinsky's pulsating modernist ballet, fêted its centennary in 2013, but Roméo Castellucci has kept us hanging for an extra year. A long time in the works, the Italian artist's production promises to be as radical as Stravinsky's work was a hundred years ago. For starters, the dancers are gone, replaced – we kid you not – by a swirling cloud of ground animal bone, whipped and steered across the stage through a complex digital mechanism. What sounds absurd (and potentially underwhelming) on paper may yet prove an astute take on the spectacle – after all, what is Stravinsky's score if not an allegory of the biological processes that tie nature together?
The music itself will be performed by the reliably good Music Aeterna orchestra. As a bonus, the show will be preceded by a short musical performance from Castellucci's partner in crime Scott Gibbons. One for fans of experimentation.
