In 1970, the Armenian filmmaker Artavazd Peleshyan released a film called 'Inhabitants' – an ode to wildlife that opens with a shot of a swan with outstretched wings. Fascinated by the film, and this image in particular, Patti Smith has composed a suite that pays tribute to the director while tracing the motif of swans in music and poetry throughout the ages. Going by Smith's track record, what sounds insufferably conceptual on paper promises to be mesmeric in performance. Oh, and Peleshyan will be there in person.
