Five Minutes with Robert Luketic

Updated: 23 Jan 2014

Meet Robert Luketic. Yes, he’s the Australian born film director who gave us, among others, ‘Ugly Truth’ with Katherine Heigl, ‘Monster in Law’ with Jennifer Lopez, ‘Legally Blonde’ with Reese Witherspoon and ‘21’ with Kevin Spacey. Yes, his film ‘Legally Blonde’ was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards. And yes, he flies jets, is single and good-looking to boot. However, what impresses us most is the fact that this is his second time in Penang and he loves it. Here, he tells Su Aziz why and more, before attending Tropfest SEA event on Jan 25 in Penang.

How would you describe yourself?
I'm a giant ball of nervous and creative energy. (TOP says: And that’s what keeps him young since he declares himself to be ‘eternally youthful’ when asked his age.)

Where do you live and work now?
In Hollywood along with two Weimaraner (dogs) I call my fur babies.

What's the most important lesson your job as a film director has taught you?
Patience and respect. But most of all, and I know it’s hard to believe, humility.

Which film do you wish you had made? And why?
The film I wish I had made is 'Cinema Paradiso' by Giuseppe Tornatore. It reminds me of when I fell in love with cinema.

How do you relax?
I fly jets and cook. (TOP says: It’s so easy to fall for this guy, right?)

Where do you see yourself and your career 10 years from now?
In 10 years, I hope to make films that help illuminate the human condition and show that despite all of the diversity, we are all the same.

What's your impression of Penang so far?
It’s my second visit to Penang and so I can honestly say I love it. For someone who loves food, Penang is such a culinary adventure and, historically there is a lot about Malaysia that fascinates me.

For you, Tropfest is… affirmation of the importance and power of the short film. It was a short film and a festival like Tropfest that gave me my break in Hollywood.
