Now Open: Three Sixty Sky Bar
Newly opened, the Three Sixty Degree Sky Bar is atop the Bayview Hotel. Once you step out onto this bar, you'd hardly notice anything else but the view that'll have you holding your breath for a moment. Pan your sight from left to right to see the colours of the sunset (which can be especially spectacular if it had been a scorching day), the sea dotted with a brightly lit cruise ship or two, George Town complete with streets, rooftops of buildings and in the distance, the pier at the beginning of Weld Quay.
After all that, take a breath and enjoy the sparse simplicity of the place itself that results in a spacious feel. Its bar is slightly elevated on one end, giving an impression as if it's floating above the buildings and is dramatically backdropped by sky. The beauty of its location is that it's not situated too high as to evoke vertigo and not too low as to merely allow peeks into neighbouring buildings' windows.
A view of George Town by night from a corner of the bar
Food and beverage wise, they, of course, have a host of wines, cocktails and beers to offer while food is either the semi dinner buffet or ala carte dinner menu from the revolving restaurant that it's attached to. Prices for a starter is around RM18++ for bruschetta and from around RM38++ for a main dish. Their food style is Western and their flavours are quite satisfying.
For instance, their main dish of seared chicken breast is served on a bed of baked potatoes, dressed rocket salad and grilled tomato halves. In fact, we'd recommed easy to 'handle' dishes and familiar flavours here for the sake of your dining comfort due to its bar style seating and dim lighitng. A small tip: Dine in style within the air-conditioned revolving restaurant that's right beside the bar and step out onto the alfresco bar after your meal.
In a nutshell, this is not a spot to miss when in George Town and it is the only sky bar in town. As the night progresses, the house music caters to the younger crowd thirsty for a drink or three and each other's company. So, for a quieter moment, hit this bar by 7pm when the temperature's cooler. The ambience is both chic and casual as only Penang bars can balance so well. Su Aziz
