Rustic, down to earth and rather hip, this cafe opens early for breakfast and serves good bakery fare from the Rainforest bakery next door – the town's favourite bakery. Otherwise, this café’s menu consists of yogurt with a variety of toppings and five sorts of bagel sandwiches to accompany your favourite morning cuppa. Simplicity is the keyword here but do not mistake it as average. Their fare is anything but.
Our favourite from their list of bagel sandwiches – that includes fillings such as corned beef and rocket, turkey ham and cranberry sauce, bacon and egg at RM10 each – is the smoked salmon and cream cheese one. The bagel, made fresh daily, is dense and toasted while the slices of smoked salmon plus the creamy cream cheese simply pads the tummy wonderfully. For RM5, you can choose to have only the toasted bagel and cream cheese.
On really warm afternoons, we recommend any one of their yogurt with combined toppings at RM10. Out of the four combined toppings on offer – including walnut and raisins, walnut and mango, jackfruit and gula Melaka (palm sugar) – we feel kiwi and honey is best for a cool tummy-tamer. Their homemade yogurt is thick, the honey is mild in flavour and the kiwi gives each spoonful texture. Their portion is also a good-sized one, enough to keep you full till the next mealtime.
Finally, freshly brewed coffee in forms of latte, cappuccino, espresso or good ol’ plain black will punctuate your simple but comforting meal here. Run by one of the café’s proprietors along with his bright, young staff, the service is friendly and efficient too,
Being on one of George Town's busiest streets certainly gives you ample opportunity to people-watch while sipping piping hot freshly brewed coffee. So, take a load off and pop into this one for morning, mid day or evening jolt and fortification. Oh, don't forget to snap a mugshot of yourself here too! Su Aziz
