What is it?
Considered to be one of the most iconic bookstores in the world, Livraria Lello is situated in the heart of Porto on Rua das Carmelitas and is an important part of the city’s historical heritage. It features impressive neo-Gothic architecture, carved wood, gilded columns, and ornate ceilings and sells some 300,000 books a year.
What is the J. K. Rowling connection?
The Harry Potter author used to live in Porto, and is said to have been inspired by the city’s architecture. Climbing the ornate staircases in Livraria Lello, it’s easy to imagine you’re running late to a class in Hogwarts’ astronomy tower.
How much does it cost?
There is a three-tier ticket system, and the cost of all tickets can be redeemed against the purchase of books. The entry-level ticket is the silver, at €8; the next step up is the gold ticket (€15.95), which will buy you entry and a book from The Collection by Livraria Lello, the shop’s exclusive range; and the platinum ticket (€50) will get you priority entrance to the shop, as well as access to the Gemma Room.
How long should I spend there?
An hour should be enough time to browse the shelves and snap some pics of the gorgeous interiors.
When is it open?
The shop is open every day from 9am to 7.30pm and is closed on December 25, January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1 and June 24.
Time Out tip
The shop can get quite busy, so it’s best to visit at the end of the day to avoid crowds.
