Gustaf Vasa Kyrka

Gustaf Vasa Kyrka review Rate it

The striking 60m-high (200ft) dome of Gustaf Vasa Kyrka rises far above Odenplan and its decidedly less impressive neighbouring buildings. This white church in the Italian baroque style is, without doubt, Vasastaden's most beautiful building. Completed in 1906, Gustaf Vasa Kyrka stands on a triangular island near the intersection of two busy streets. The spectacular 1731 altarpiece is Sweden's largest baroque sculpture, originally created for the Uppsala cathedral. It depicts Jesus on the cross in front of a relief of Jerusalem. The ceiling frescoes in the dome, by Vicke Andrén, show scenes from the New Testament.
