Stockholm's suburban art scene is flourishing, with spiralling rents pushing
galleries out to bigger and more attractive spaces. One of the latest initiatives to open up is WIP, Work in Progress. It is a studio association with nearly 100 studios, hosting mostly artists but also dancers and musicians. The huge building is situated in Årsta, and used to be a warehouse for the Swedish film industry.
The best way to get a peek into the studios and meet people is to go to an opening. WIP hosts six exhibitions a year with mostly international artists. During opening nights, studios in different areas of the building are kept open and you are welcome to visit them. Other events include lectures once a month, screenings and talks. An artists' archive can be accessed in the showroom, containing a complete description of residing artists, and there is a small art bookshop in the entrance.
