With six stages in all, plus its successful summer Parkteatern programme, Stadsteatern is one of Scandinavia's largest theatrical institutions. Like Dramaten, it has a largely conventional repertoire. There are exceptions, though, such as Det allra viktigaste, an extraordinary four-hour play with a gay theme, directed by Suzanne Osten. The smaller stages offer more experimental drama often for a younger audience. The Marionetteatern puppet theatre, created in the 1950s by puppet master Michael Meschke, also has its home at Stadsteatern. The adjacent puppet museum, Marionettmuseet, contains puppets from all over the world.
