To further appreciate the tricky balance of humor and pathos achieved in 2011’s 50/50, check out this cringeworthy feel-good weepie, which finds Kate Hudson’s vivacious ad-pitch whiz questioning her life choices after being diagnosed with terminal colon cancer. She also falls for her doctor (Gael García Bernal), and in typical disease-of-the-week-film duplicity, the cinematographer and makeup department ensure she looks conspicuously healthy whenever the story requires a soft-lit interlude. Colon cancer isn’t a great pretext for uplift or an occasion for Bucket List–style hang gliding, snappy dream-sequence banter with Whoopi Goldberg as God and a brief comic bit featuring Peter Dinklage as an escort.
