How very: Kokandy Productions will stage the Chicago premiere of the Off Broadway hit Heathers: The Musical, the theater company announced today. The musical adaptation of the ultra-dark film comedy, by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O'Keefe, premiered at New York's New World Stages in 2014; our colleagues at Time Out New York said it had "a depth of feeling and a lyrical polish that elevate the material above a retro goof." Allison Hendrix will direct Kokandy's production for a February–April 2016 run.

Also on Kokandy's 2016 slate is Gutenberg! The Musical, a metatheatrical goof in which two would-be playwrights pitch a musical about the inventor of the printing press, playing all the parts themselves. The musical, written by Scott Brown and Anthony King, had a commercial run at the Royal George Theatre in 2008; I talked to the authors about the project at the time. Kokandy's staging, to be directed by John D. Glover, will run in July and August of 2016.

The company also announced A Kokandy Christmas, a holiday variety show conceived by Hendrix and Michael Potsic, to run December 3–24 of this year. All three productions will take place at Theater Wit. Kokandy's current The Full Monty runs through April 12.
