From the old men gathered over pepper-and-egg sandwiches to the red-and-white vinyl tablecloths and the Filbert’s soda bottles, everything about this joint is classic. There really is a Joe, and pictures of his fishing expeditions hang on the walls alongside photos of Walter Payton and John Wayne. You can have any deli meat you want shoved between Gonnella loaves, but the red-sauced chicken Parmesan and the capicola, salami and mortadella–filled Italian Special are the best. And surprisingly, if you’ve got a hankering for Mexican, Joe’s freshly fried flautas rule the neighborhood.
