Penny Lane Hair Studios There’s more to this library-themed Logan Square salon than straightforward cuts and coloring. Owner/licensed barber Christine Conley and her business partner/licensed cosmetologist Coral Gable studied costume design at DePaul University as undergrads, where they focused on wigs and makeup. A few years later, they’re putting their degrees to good use, using the salon as a studio for building and designing wigs for local theater productions when they’re not behind the chair. Their training in historical fashion means they’re equally adept at pin curls and modern asymmetrical cuts. And in addition to offering full makeup application for shows and special events, the salon features a DIY nail bar where customers can entertain themselves while they wait. 2568 N Sawyer Ave (773-486-3826, pennylanechicago.com).
