Walking into Teck Huat is like a nostalgia fest – this time-warped candy shop is lined with jars of sweets you imagine no longer exist. Who needs Dum Dums when preserved sour plums can give you that instant lip-stained pucker? Azure chocolate candies existed in the ’80s even before M&M’s thought blue was cool. The reason your neighbourhood sundry shop still sells haw flakes, Apollo wafers and white rabbit sweets is because Teck Huat has been distributing them to more than 30 places in the city since 1960. Even so, you can still pick up a few sweets for yourself without having to buy in wholesale quantities. Teck Huat is so old-fashioned you’ll need to climb a creaky ladder to reach the upper shelves – it’s this sort of retro appeal that brings out the child in us.
