Craft beers, geezers and cocktails... Young and Jacksons has it all

No matter how many times we pass the grand old pub opposite Flinders Street Station, the old girl never fails to surprise. Simultaneously a beauty and a beast, there’s a profusion of punters sporting dreadlocks, mullets and face tattoos, and a pervasive aroma of spilt beer, Jamesons shots and sweat on a Saturday night. But Young and Jacksons refuses to compromise on its standards just because its location attracts likely lads. For starters, craft beer is king here. In the rear bar, you can take a flight of Murray’s Ales, or get the chocolaty Grizzly porter. They even have a Young and Jackson’s witbier made by Matilda Bay. The place is alo stunning and phenomenally huge. Royal blue carpeted stairs draw you up to a cocktail bar with chaise longues and the original ‘Chloe’ painting – a huge nude portrait which has been causing a stir since 1909 (a punter was once committed after throwing a pint her way). While it might be Cumberland sausages and mash in the sports bar, up here, a fine dining restaurant (yep, really) serves the likes of chicken stuffed with a scallop farce. In other hidden-things-we-always-forget, there’s an AstroTurf cider garden on the roof, begging for sunny Sunday pints. There are few places where you can get a decent cocktail on a gilded chair while the police take a statement at the next table. More's the pity, we say.
