Time Out says

This historic theatre has played host to some of the most respected names in entertainment

The majestic Palais Theatre, located right next door to Melbourne Luna Park, is the grande dame of Australian theatres. It seats 2,896 patrons and has played host to some of the most respected names in entertainment. Music, comedy, theatre, dance, films, and fundraisers all have a place at the Palais Theatre. Ever watched the Melbourne Comedy Festival Gala on TV? That's the Palais Theatre.

The historical theatre reopened in May 2017 after a $20 million makeover including a paint job returning the exterior to its original yellow hue. Today, it continues its run as one of the premier live music venues in the city.

Dawn French

  • Stand Up

Her Royal Highness Queen Dawn French has announced she will be gracing Aussie shores for a stand-up show with a name befit for royalty: Dawn French is a Huge Twat.  While Dawn French is indisputably one of the reigning queens of British comedy, she is also an adored figure here in Australia. The latest tour will mark her first since 2016, when she performed 38 sell-out shows nationwide. French will perform dates across Australia before four exclusive performances at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre on April 23, 24, 26 and 27, 2024. The Welsh actress, writer and comedian broke onto the scene as one half of the legendary comedy duo French and Saunders (with Absolutely Fabulous’s Jennifer Saunders) before blazing a trail through TV comedy in the ‘80s and ‘90s, spoofing and satirising everyone from Oasis and the Corrs to films like Titanic and the Lord of the Rings series.  She also found mammoth success in Richard Curtis’s TV series The Vicar of Dibley, which attracted more than 12 million viewers to its series finale. She is a best-selling author and appeared on the stage in plays like A Midsummer Night’s Dream and films like Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia series. Her latest book, The Twat Files, will be published in October. The Live Nation/Ticketmaster presale will commence on Wednesday, December 6 at 11am for 24 hours. General tickets will go on sale from Thursday, December 7 at 12pm. Ali Wong

  • Stand Up

Last year was a huge one for Ali Wong. The Emmy Award-winning actor and comedian shot even further into prominence when the dark comedy Beef was released in April 2023 to widespread acclaim, and she’s only continued to fly since then. Wong spent the rest of the year taking her stand-up show Ali Wong: Live all around the United States to rave reviews. Now, some of us Melburnians will soon be lucky enough to see her in real life. That’s right: on July 11, 12, 14 and 15, Ali Wong will be in our city, performing her trademark brand of stand-up at the Palais Theatre. Originally only one show was planned, but Melburnians have been champing at the bit to see her so much that the dates have quadrupled. After her stint in Melbourne, Wong will continue her tour up through Sydney and Brisbane.  Tickets start from $102 and range up to $274 – check out what’s available here. In the meantime, study up by watching one of Wong’s three Netflix specials, the first of which came out back in 2016. After more rib-splitting laughs? Check out who's performing at the 2024 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Laufey

  • Pop

The past few years have seen Icelandic-Chinese singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Laufey ascend from social media fame into the realm of major league pop artists.  Laufey, who is known for her soul-soothing vocals infused with the elegant air of eras past, draws inspiration from greats of the classical and jazz scenes. However, this is not the music your parents or grandparents listened to – despite her wonderfully warm and nostalgic sound, Laufey writes from a distinctly 21st century, 20-something point of view.  Having released her debut album Everything I Know About Love (not to be confused with the hit Dolly Alderton book of the same name) back in 2022, Laufey has risen to global fame in just a handful of years. She blessed our ears with her third album Bewitched in September 2023, which hit number one on Billboard’s Jazz Chart and scored a Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Off the back of that stunning success, Laufey is bringing her Bewitched: The Goddess Tour to Australia’s East Coast this September. She’d originally planned on playing just one Melbourne show, but has now added two more thanks to popular demand. Fans will now have the chance to be enchanted by Laufey on September 6, 7 and 9 at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda. These Melbourne shows will kick off the tour, before she heads to QPAC Concert Hall in Brisbane and the Sydney Opera House.  Tickets are on sale from today, so run, don’t walk over to Ticketek to secure yours.  Stay in

An Evening with Dolly Alderton

  • Talks and discussions

Edit: A second Melbourne show has been added to Dolly Alderton's tour, after her first date completely sold out. She'll now be doing a show at the Palais Theatre on November 13 in addition to her booked out talk at the Arts Centre Melbourne on November 14. Tickets to her talk at the Palais Theatre are on sale now, you can buy them here – snap them up while you can! If you know a young woman who's an avid reader, chances are her eyes will light up at the mention of best-selling author Dolly Alderton. The British writer skyrocketed to popularity with her debut memoir-turned-TV show, Everything I Know About Love – a quasi-bible for those navigating life in the fraught 20s age demographic.  For the very first time, Alderton is headed Down Under for a tour of talks, off the back of her latest New York Times best-selling novel Good Material. She's heading to Arts Centre Melbourne for an appearance on November 14, and bringing along her latest stories for Melburnians to enjoy. Not only is she a beloved author, but Alderton originally gained recognition for her Sunday Times 'Dear Dolly' advice column – and she'll incorporate her favourite anecdotes from this within her live show, as well as her own insightful musings on various aspects of life. Audiences will have a chance to ask questions of their own, too, so get brainstorming.  Alderton will also make appearances in Sydney on November 5 and 6, Perth on November 10 and Brisbane on November 17 before heading to Wellington on Novembe
