Time Out says

4 out of 5 stars

There’s something very theatrical about art deco architecture, and the Colony Theatre is a gem of a 1934 building, which has been faithfully refurbished in recent years. The Miami Lyric Opera stages productions here, but there is also comedy, dance and contemporary theater, such as Angels in America, or one-off movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It’s at the western end of the Lincoln Road Mall, so you’re surrounded by restaurants and bars for a little post-performance fun.

Colony Theatre’s history

The iconic Miami Beach venue first opened its doors on January 25, 1935 as a Paramount Pictures movie house. Back then its capacity was just shy of 900 seats. The Theatre is one of Miami Beach’s best examples of the Art Deco architecture the city is known for, and many still flock to the venue today simply to ogle.

The renovation of the Colony Theatre

In 2006, the Colony Theatre got a serious facelift that ended up going slightly over budget and costing $6.5 million. But it was worth it. Today the Colony is a gorgeous ode to its former glory, and remains one of Miami Beach’s most popular pieces of architecture.

Events and programming at the Colony Theatre

Today Colony Theatre hosts plays, comedy, opera, dance and other theater events. It is also the home base of Miami New Drama, and houses the troupe during its theatrical season. Tickets are available to purchase at www.colonymb.org.
