Sex Education is coming back with a bang. Netflix has confirmed that filming has started on the fourth season of its much-loved hit comedy and there’s much to get excited about.

So far, the comedy-drama has followed a group of high school students who launch their own sex therapy clinic to handle the trials and tribulations of adolescence.

But season four promises to take viewers in a new direction, with the teens moving to a new college and a romance storyline split across the globe.

Here’s all we know so far about the fourth season of Sex Education.

When will Sex Education season 4 be on Netflix?

The fourth and final instalment of Sex Education will be streaming on Netflix from September 21, 2023, just in time for the new term.

Who will be returning to the Sex Education cast?

Most of your favourite Sex Education stars will be back for the upcoming fourth season.

Asa Butterfield will return as student Otis Milburn, alongside Gillian Anderson as his sex therapist mother Jean.

Ncuti Gatwa is also confirmed to return for the fourth series. Fans were concerned that his character, Eric Effiong, might not be back due to Gatwa’s commitments with his upcoming roles in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie and becoming the next Time Lord in Doctor Who. Emma Mackey has also been confirmed to return to season four.

Other returning cast members include Aimee Lou Wood, Barbie’s Connor Swindells, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Dua Saleh, Alistair Petrie and Samantha Spiro.

Who is joining the cast of Sex Education?

Schitt’s about to get real, quite literally. Dan Levy – producer, writer, director and star of hit comedy Schitt’s Creek – is joining the cast of Sex Education.

Levy is playing Thomas Molloy, a cult author and tutor of Emma Mackey’s Maeve, who is now studying at Wallace University in the US.

Other new faces include Lisa McGrillis as Otis's aunt, Thaddea Graham (Doctor Who), Marie Reuther (from HBO drama Kamikaze) and newcomers Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James and Imani Yahshua.

Is there a trailer for Sex Education series four?

The long-awaited trailer for the final series is finally here, and by the looks of it, the residents of Moordale will be going out on a high.

What happened in Sex Education so far?

Season one of Sex Education introduced viewers to Otis (Asa Butterfield), a student at Moordale Secondary School who lives with his sex therapist mother (Gillian Anderson).

Otis sets up a sex support group for the students after noticing his friendship group is entangled with all sorts of personal trauma, puberty problems, and relationship woes. All seems fine and business is booming for the underground student group, but Otis soon finds he has emotional feelings for co-founder and classmate, Maeve (Emma Mackey).

The climax – pardon the pun – of Sex Education season three saw the shock announcement that the school will be closing, leaving the students to all look for alternative schooling arrangements for their future. Plus, with a dash of heartbreak, Otis and Maeve said their farewells as Maeve moved to America for her studies.

What will happen in Sex Education season four?

Season 4 will pick up a couple of months after the end of season 3.

‘Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, the students are navigating new territory at the high-tech and progressive Cavendish Sixth Form College,’ runs the official synopsis. ‘It’s every health and wellness nut’s dream with yoga on the lawn, a strong sustainability vibe and even a rival sex therapist on campus.

‘This rivalry isn’t the only thing bothering Otis, as he’s juggling a long-distance relationship with Maeve. She’s living her dream at the prestigious Wallace University in the US and being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy, played by Dan Levy.’

The series of course revisits other beloved characters. Jackson continues to struggle to get over Cal, while Viv is grappling with adjusting to Cavendish's lax, student-led approach. Aimee and Adam make a reappearance, while respectively still trying to find their niches.

Of course, Sex Education would not be complete without an insight into the students' home lives. Jean is struggling with returning to the role of single-mum, and we also get more of an insight into Cal's relationship with their family.

It promises to be a cracker of a final season.

A Schitt’s Creek star is joining Sex Education for the new season.
