Christmas guide: Activities

‘Tis the season to be jolly and there are plenty of activities happening around the island that are listed here to add to that festive mood, adding colour to your ‘Ho, ho, ho!’ and sprinkle a little more joy to your season’s greetings.

Dec 19: Christmas Carol Concert
Hear the sleigh bells ring at the E&O Hotel. The Penang Philharmonic Choir will make their debut in the hotel's Christmas Carol concert that will feature popular Christmas jingles and all the well-loved festive carols. Tickets for the concert are now available at the E&O Hotel and the Penang Philharmonic Office at Dewan Sri Pinang at RM20 for children and RM35 for adults. The concert begins at 8.15pm to 10pm.

Dec 21 – 23: Songs of The Festive Season and a Christmas Musical
This double bill will feature an acapella recital of traditional carols and Yuletide favourites as well as a musical that centers on a little girl's Christmas wish for Santa Claus. Taking the stage will be the acapella talents of Six2Eight. Tickets are ar RM40 and RM60. Log onto www.penangpac.org for booking details or call them at +604 899 1722. The performance begins at 8:30pm on those respective dates with 3pm matinees on Dec 22 and Dec 23.

Dec 24: White Christmas Countdown Party at Sixty9ine Mansion
This all-white countdown party will host homegrown DJs including Astro Hitz Spin Master champ DJ Ramsey, Heineken Thirst 2011 runner up DJ Sabrina and resident DJ Travol to heat up Sixty9ine’s dance floor in Btu Ferringhi. Adhering to its all-white rule will get you a priority entry and free drinks before 11pm. Party kicks off at 9pm right up to 3am.

Dec 24: White Christmas Eve Foam Party
It's snowing foam in this side of town as Hard Rock Hotel prepares their space for a White Christmas Eve Foam Party. Tickets are priced at RM20 for kids and RM30 for adults. It's a great one to bring your whole family for a snowy day out from 5pm to 7pm. Adults should stay on till after 7:30pm to enjoy the music. Spinning the decks throughout the night will be DJ Nikki, noted for addictive tech house and electro spins as well as her string of accolades including Heineken's Juice DJ Quest and Choons Award for Best Female DJ.

Dec 24 – 25: Santa Walkabout and Caroling
During Christmas, Santa Claus will be making his rounds with walkabouts along with his chirpy Santarina entourage at Prangin Mall throughout both days. Take your chance and snap a photo with our favourite jolly man. If you're lucky, you might walk away with little gifts from him as well. Make sure you stick around for the harmonious Christmas Unplug Singing of carols happening throughout the mall at various times.

Dec 24: Anniversary Beer Promotion
Christmas Eve is the last day of this beer promotion at Brussels Beer Café at Gurney Paragon. Enjoy five pints of Grimbergen Blanche for RM50 whilst two pints are at RM25. The deal is on daily between 11am to 8pm.

Until Dec 25: Garfield Live

Every day, except Tuesday, until Christmas, catch Garfield and friends as they roam around the ground floor of Queensbay Mall’s Central Atrium between 1pm and 7:25pm for a meet and greet session. They’ll be doing a friendly walkabout, Christmas musical stage live show and a special session called 'Make a Wish with Santa and The Elf'. Grab the opportunity for a snapshot moment with the orange fur ball and friends.

Dec 25 – 28: World’s Best Movies
In the upcoming installation of World's Best Movies, penangpac will be screening a slew of classic films across the globe. Happening this December, catch a batch of movies such as Bicycle Thieves (Dec 25), Fellini's Casanova (Dec 26), Underground (Dec 27) and The Wild Bunch (Dec 28). Screenings will be at Stage 2 in penangpac, Straits Quay at 7:30pm on the respective dates and admission is free.

Dec 25: Xmas Children’s Colouring Contest
On Christmas day, divert your children's restless energy by signing them up for a Christmas colouring contest between 3pm and 6pm at Dessert & Ice Cream Garden on the first floor of Prangin Mall. Open to children aged three to six years old, each participant is given an hour to paint or colour their artwork. The top five winners will win a trophy, a school bag and certificate. To assure your children's utmost comfort, parents are advised to bring their own kid-sized table and chairs as well as colouring materials. To participate, it’s RM12 per child.

Dec 26: Gary Chaw 'Hollywood Zoo' Album Promotional Tour

Party on after Christmas with Malaysian-born mandopop sensation Gary Chaw. He’ll be heading to Soju Room at Penang Times Square for a promotional tour of his latest album, 'Hollywood Zoo'. With musical influences like John Legend and Jamie Cullum, fans can look forward to brand new tracks of feel-good sounds and upbeat tempo. Supporting act includes Korean DJ Siera Lee. It’s RM80 inclusive of one drink and begins at 10pm.
