Considered as a floating resort, this ship offers a complete escapade from reality, as Su Aziz discovers.

The ship’s behemoth size cast a sharp shadow onto Penang’s Port Swettenham on Weld Quay, shielding a large part of it from the sweltering afternoon sun. 250 paces long and 10 storeys high, the SuperStar Libra is known as the ship that never sleeps.

Between Wednesday and Saturday, it does the one-night cruise to nowhere run that returns to port each morning before pushing off again by 9pm the same night and returning as early as 8am the next morning – a perfect hour to step off the ship utterly refreshed and straight into the office! The rest of the week it does the three-night and four-day cruise to Phuket and Krabi, and back to Penang on the fourth morning.

This hard-working ship, in fact, is an alternative universe or a floating resort for its passengers. Within it are 677 rooms of different levels of comfort and luxury. There are numerous food and beverage outlets offering Chinese, western, local and international cuisine separately, casinos, gym, pools, performance halls that fit an audience of a thousand or more, golf driving range, karaoke lounge, spa and of course, a jogging track that runs the entire ship’s girth.

There are lifts to carry you up and down to each level in comfort while you explore everything the ship has to offer – you’re encouraged to explore and enjoy their (almost) countless amenities plus live entertainment such as world class acrobatic performances along with dancers from Belarus. Since it’s a floating ‘country’, so to speak, it’s also duty free with retail shops offering duty free goods from cigarettes, alcoholic beverages to cosmetics and fashion accessories.

Cruises begin at around RM160++ for a one night cruise to nowhere and around RM1,600++ for the three-night cruise to Phuket and Krabi. Prices vary according to promotions available and it includes room stay, main meals, certain live performances, casino entry and many other amenities.

Among its many eateries and performances, there are a few payable ones. This basically means, these are food and beverage outlets or performances that are not included in your price package and you pay as you eat or view. Their 3-day cruise allows you to hop on and off when the ship docks at a port but you’re to return for your meals (if you choose to) and to sleep (mandatory).
