Nearly fifty years ago, Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore and Malaya became Malaysia. This weekend, we celebrate that with a myriad of activities right here in George Town and you’re invited!
Light and Sound Show
A first for George Town, the event will see a spectacular video projection mapping that will have Penang Town Hall's walls and windows come to life with music. In celebration of Hari Raya and Malaysia Day, the 25-minute showcase will have three screening time with an additional performance throughout its half hour intervals between each set. So, gather your pals, bring along floor mats or portable stools, and spread them at the Padang Kota Lama, for a night of stellar light show played before you. There will also be food and handicraft stalls for a quick bite or souvenir shopping.
Malaysia Day at Penang Hill
Penang Hill will host our annual Malaysia Day celebration this year. An historical event that marks the establishment of Malaysia, the event promises to be a spectacular treat for Penangites. There will be traditional Boria performance, Malaysia culture dances, patriotic poem's recital and games to take part in. Stay a little longer and catch the firework an its glorious display at 9.15pm. Complimentary entrance for all Sarawakians, Sabahans and Malaysians celebrating their birthday on Sep 16 (MyKad must be shown at the information kiosk).
Birth of a Band: Penang Philharmonic Jazz Band
In the latest series of 'Birth of a Band', the event will feature the newly formed Penang Philharmonic Jazz Band for an afternoon of easy listening and jazz music. Special guests appearance by Damien Chew. For a seat in this jazz performance, tickets are now available at penangpac.
Ukiyo-e (also known as ‘pictures of the floating world’) is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints produced between the 17th and 20th century. Drop by the gallery and admire 75 pieces of artwork featuring motifs of landscapes, theatre and pleasure quarters. Featured artists include Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Tosyusai Syaraku and Kitagawa Utamaro.
Car Boot Sale by the Sea
If you have second-hand books, pre-loved clothes or fancy knick knacks for sale, then pack them neatly into your car boot and head on to the Straits Quay's monthly Car Boot Sale. Happening every third Saturday of the month, the sale starts in the evening for a good four hours. You can shop and hunt for interesting pieces to splurge on. Interested vendors can save a spot for their vehicles at RM10 for sedans and RM20 for MPVs. Vans, lorries and other large vehicles are not eligible for this event.
Adam and Eve Dance Theatre
Developed by Jack Kek after his humble return from Taiwan, 'Adam and Eve' is a contemporary dance performance that dwells on the romantic story between the first man and woman. Bringing the vision to life are Jack Kek himself who will play Adam with dancer Hoi Cheng Sim as Eve.
Hard Rock 3rd Anniversary Party
Hard Rock Hotel Penang is turning three and they're celebrating their birthday with a pool party. Put on your best swimwear and join them for a party with live performances by Mizz Nina and DJ Roxy June at the decks till the wee hours. ASEANA Percussion Unit is also set to perform at the party. Tickets are available from the Rock Shop bungalow.
Laughing Penang Photography Exhibition
The Laughing Penang Photography Exhibition this month is sure to make you smile. The exhibition will showcase portraits of Penangites having a laugh or carving bright smiles while being out and about on the bustling streets of Penang. Who knows? You may just be featured in one of the photographs! Held in celebration of our 55th National Day, this feel-good exhibition is until Sep 16.
