Penang Top Five: Brandon Tan

Updated: 23 Oct 2012

A born and bred Penangite, Brandon Tan, the creative mind behind Bran et Daguet’s clothing designs, has always had a love affair with the industry from a very young age. Running on a busy schedule, Brandon shares his top five favourites places to eat and things to do in Penang.

1. Bukit Genting Hill
Located at Balik Pulau, it's a spectacular hillside retreat, has a unique accommodation, a family leisure park, delicious Thai cuisine and breath-taking views. Visit around 5 pm as it’s a good time to enjoy the sunset while having a Thai dinner. In addition to the view, the fresh air at this place is totally awesome! A perfect getaway from the busy city life.

2. Macalister Mansion
Since Bagan has relocated from Jalan Bagan Jermal to Macalister Mansion on Macalister Road, it is now a more stylish bar which compliments the sophisticated restaurant which serves fine cuisine. There’s also a live band and DJ.

3. Agua Mediterranean Restaurant
This restaurant offers cuisine with flavours from Morocco, Spain, France, Middle East and Italy. The result is an elegant yet relaxed setting indoors and a nice outdoor patio with a view of the marina. It is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine.

4. Straits Quay
It's where I spend alot of my time and where my boutique is located. It is by the sea and has lovely balmy, breezy evenings due to this. What's more, it is an easy location to get to in Tanjung Tokong and has a nice collection of eateries to satisfy even the most discerning palate.

5. Gurney Drive
It's a great place to walk before 10am to maintain physical fitness. There are good coffee shops, a shopping mall, 24 hour nasi kandar place, local food stalls and other cool places along this stretch to chill and meet up with people. It is located in a strategic location along the water and has a lot to offer from where to go to what to eat. I never get bored with it.
