Penang Top Five: Kimberley Leggett
Our reigning Miss Universe Malaysia 2012, Kimberley Leggett was born and raised in Penang. Although the statuesque beauty has recently relocated to Kuala Lumpur but at heart, she's a Penangite through and through. Taking a break from her pageant duties, the beauty queen shares her top five favourite attractions on the island.
1. Penang Hill via Botanic Gardens
Hiking up Penang Hill via the Botanic Garden ‘Step Trail 46’ is the best way to kill two birds with one stone. The beauty and greenery of the Botanic Garden as well as the panoramic views of Penang Bridge and George Town can all be enjoyed. It’s a great, tranquil getaway from the sun and heat of the island's beach. Plus you’re getting some exercise to burn off all the amazing Penang food you’ve indulged in!
2. Gurney Drive
You probably can’t visit Penang without spending some time along this famous stretch. If you’re a shopper, Gurney Plaza is the place where you can spend your whole day in. And if you’re a foodie, visiting the Gurney Drive Hawker stalls is a must. They have everything from Penang char kuay teow, rojak, pasembur and all sorts of other local delicacies.
3. Upper Penang Road
Whether you visit the Upper Penang Road famed for its nightlife and entertainment spots such as Mois and Slippery Senoritas, or its back streets, you will be able to enjoy both the modern and antique side of Nyonya Penang in the heart of George Town. Chinatown, Little India and Soho can all be found around here too. My favorite find is China House which is made out of three heritage buildings and serves as art galleries, restaurant and café. Also, within the area is the famous Nasi Kandar Line Clear, which is another mamak favourite.
4. Batu Ferringhi
Sun, sand and sea! The ultimate beach location on the island where by day, you can sit back and relax on the long stretch of beach, go horseback riding or get active with watersports. By night, moving more inland, the Batu Ferringhi night market is an awesome place to pick up souvenirs or you can chill at beachside spots such as Bora Bora with a cocktail in hand. If you’re used to Batu Ferringhi, venturing to little known Monkey Beach can be a new adventure too.
5. Straits Quay
Although fairly new, Straits Quay is becoming one of the cool hangout spots on the island. At night time especially, it can be the place to wine and dine with the somewhat romantic view of the small yacht harbour as well as the calm sounds of the sea if you walk along the Quay. There are great eateries, pubs and bars around here, so you are spoilt for choices.
