New Year's: Where to party and dine

The world didn’t end as predicted. Therefore, we recommend celebrating the dawning of 2013 whole-heartedly. To help you enhance the celebration, here’s a list of where to eat and to party on the Dec 31 and even one on New Year’s Day itself.

New Year’s Eve Dinner at Sesame + Soy
Recognized by many for its modern and contemporary twist to Chinese cuisine, Sesame + Soy has a succulent six-course dinner planned for New Year's eve. Their Seafood Trio Platter consisting of sauteed fresh scallop and crab meat, deep-fried oyster and chilled prawn will be a delighful starter to complement a serving of asparagus soup, wok-fried slipper lobster flavoured with dried shrimps and more. The dinner’s at RM108++ per person.

New Year’s Eve Gourmet Dinner at Tiffins
In this six-course gourmet dinner, begin with nicoise salad with mango and pomegranate dressing before diving into various mains like a slow baked lobster marinated with herb and lime citrus, pan seared Norwegian salmon, green olive tapenade, Australian wagyu beef fillet and oven baked Dorper lamb rack, among others. After dinner, make your way to the hotel's bar, Uncle Zack by the Beach, where seats are readily reserved for after drinks. The dinner’s at RM348++ per person.

New Year’s Eve Buffet Dinner at David Brown’s
Atop Penang Hill is where you want to be for the best Penang landscape amid fireworks this New Year's eve. Along with a buffet spread of western and local favourites and meats of all sorts, satiate those overdue meaty craving. There’ll also be Christmas fare of roast turkey, traditional Christmas pudding and mince pies. Lastly, wash it down with free flow of juice, wine and beer. Reservations are well-advised for this buffet dinner. At RM288++ for adults and RM128++ for children.

New Year’s Eve Dinner at Gaya’s Beach Side Bar & Restaurant

This dinner lays out an appetizing spread such as roasted boneless lamb with olive sauce and rosemary juice, teriyaki salmon with ginger shoyu reduction as well as honey roast duck with cranberry sauce for RM100++ for adults and RM50++ for children. It begins at 7pm.

New Year’s Eve Buffet Dinner at G Café

A feast fit for a king, try their saffron flavoured seafood chowder with cheese crouton, sweet potato crusted minced lamb pie and their delicious roasted duck and chicken drenced with sweet paste, mango sauce, rosemary sauce and dark cherry sauce. What comes with this feast is a free flow of soft drinks and juices. It begins at 6:30pm and priced at RM138++ for adults and RM69++ for children. Do check out their New Year’s Day Brunch on Jan 1, for RM78++ and it’s between 12pm and 3pm.

New Years’s Eve at That Little Wine Bar
The set menu in That Little Wine Bar for this occasion includes beetroot-glazed salmon and seared foie gras with a choice of main course of pork wellingtons or black cod in papilotte. Together with a bottle of bubbly, the wine bar will be serving chocolate blancmange as well as coffee and friandise for dessert. It’s at RM498 for a couple including a bottle of bubbly or RM198 per person.

Where To Party

New Year’s Eve Countdown Party at Gurney Plaza
Count the minutes to the New Year with a grand party in Gurney Plaza. While cheering with other fellow Penangites, catch vocal powerhouse Jaclyn Victor rendering popular tunes through a show-stopping performance. Admission is free and it begins at 9pm.

Eastin Hotel's New Year Cheer promotion
For RM350++ per night, this promotion entitles you to a stay in the Deluxe Hillview room, an entry for two at The Lounge's countdown party as well as a scrumptious buffet breakfast for the morning after. This offer is only valid for check-ins on New Year's eve.

The 8th Penang Golden New Year's Eve Countdown Celebration
Our very own rock legend, Amy Search will amp up this countdown party at the Esplanade alongside local talents Tedd Chan, Azlan & the Type Writer, Alexis Gan, Drama Band and Villanz. As the party starts just before noon, stick around for a couple of activities include Volkswagen's Think Blue Convoy and Tree Planting Campaign, Penang Golden Futsal Tournament and Golden K-Pop Dance Challenge. The fun begins at 11am right up to 1am on Dec 31.

Red Beatz New Year’s Eve Party at Hard Rock Hotel

RED FM will be hosting Hard Rock's hip New Year's Eve party this year. The party will see stunning Thai DJs Roxy June and Aye heating up the dance floor with pulsating beats and popular tracks through the night. Tickets are available at Rock Shop bungalow with an early bird rate of RM60 for ticketing purchase before Dec 15. If not it’s RM95 inclusive one drink. The party begins at 7.30pm.

Queensbay Mall Countdown Party
It's a party with performances, games and fireworks on the night's itinerary. As a star-studded extravaganza, 'celebrity impersonators' will keep you entertained with chart-topping hits from Carly Rae Jepsen, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Adele, Rihanna, Pitbull and a whole lot of David Guetta. It begins at 9.30pm.

Auto-City New Year Countdown Fiesta
This is a four-day celebration and it kicks off this weekend with talent finales for Auto-City Voice Idol and Auto-City Little Idol. Monday is when the carnival will keep the spirits high with a series of colouring contests, dance performances, live band performances and its grand midnight fireworks. Along the celebrities you'll get to meet are Akademi Fantasia's alumni Lena, Singaporean crooner Mark Lee and homegrown actor Kishz. Each day it begins at 6pm right up to midnight.

New Year's Eve on Penang Hill
Usher in the new year with a panaromic view of Penang's landscape and ideal cool weather. Traditional music and cultural dances are all part of the night's fun celebration. If jamming to today's hit is a must, there are acoustic performances and bands who will be performing too. The party begins at 8pm and we suggest hopping on the furnicular train early to beat the queue.
