Penang nightlife top five

China House
China House is so hot right now that you’d blister your palms on it. If you could make a list of all the things you would want under one establishment’s roof, China House would tick all the right boxes. The aim is to cater to anyone and everyone (think Burger Bar, Bakery, Art Space and Reading Room) – the Vine & Single room is ideal for those looking to enjoy a good red wine while people go to their Canteen & Bar (pictured) to sip a mojito and listen to live music on the weekends. Penangites have fallen over themselves to proclaim their love and we’re rushing to do the same. 153 & 155 Beach Street and 183B Victoria Street, George Town (+604 263 7299/www.chinahouse.com.my).

That Little Wine Bar
This night time haunt gets so many simple things right, when so many other places complicates them. Not too overwrought – just a cosy atmosphere and a selection of wines that you want to savour for as long as possible. We often start our night out with a selection of tapas dishes and witness the night fly by. It’s not radical by any means but it’s just good. In short, we really like wine, and we really like That Little Wine Bar. Jalan Chow Thye, George Town. (+604 226 8182/www.thatlittlewinebar.com).

Nueve
The name (Nueve means ‘nine’ in Spanish) is significant here as this locale makes it a point to have something special on for their guests at this time every night. We predict some hits (promotional beverages) and some misses (live performances) but we applaud their goal to keep us entertained. It’s all about the weekend here as they usher in Friday night with drink deals that will help you forget your long work week. 10-B-02, Precinct 10, Jalan Tanjung Tokong, Tanjung Tokong. (+604 899 6725/www.facebook.com/Nueveplace).

Soho Gastropub
This is somewhere you can go for a drink and a bite to eat – a fact that contributes to the nicely casual, relaxed atmosphere. Just like its sister outlets (this Gastropub is the latest addition to the Soho Penang family), they get slammed on weekends and it’s easy to imagine people flocking here with the intent of taking advantage of the happy hour offers and having a fun night out. Here’s some free advice: do. Precinct 10, Jalan Tanjung Tokong, Tanjung Tokong. (+604 890 6617/sohopenang.com).

Bora Bora by Sunset Bistro
Go for some simple outdoor fun at this beach location where the cocktails flow liberally and the beach boys play with fire (poi sticks, just so you know). If you find yourself by the bar, you will be surrounded by fairy lights, tiki huts and various ‘tropical jungle’ paraphernalia – it’s a bit much, but we like the hokeyness. Parties extend well into the night so remember to put your flip-flops where you can find them later. Lot 415, Jalan Batu Ferringhi. (+6019 682 6467/www.facebook.com/boraborabysunset).
