As the weather gets brisker, you’re going to want to have that remote control handy—especially after Thanksgiving’s gut-bust-athon. The latest Netflix crop is a smaller bounty than usual, but we’ve found a handful of gems, well worth your eyeballs during the coming weeks. Start with these:
Total Recall (1990) “What’s da madder wid you, Cohaagen? Give dese people air!!!” The ex-Governator kicks some ass on Earth and Mars in Verhoeven’s supremely entertaining Philip K. Dick adaptation.
Hell Is for Heroes (1962) Compared to flabby ’60s prestige actioners like The Great Escape and The Dirty Dozen, Siegel’s WWII-siege B movie is a model of delirious efficiency. Steve McQueen, James Coburn, L.Q. Jones, Bob Newhart (!) and others hold off the Krauts.
Nebraska (2013) Bruce Dern is worth every bit of the praise he received for this quiet, desperate tale about a senile dad on an imaginary quest for his sweepstakes win.
Snowpiercer (2013) Silly doesn’t even begin to describe this postapocalyptic film's perpetually cruising luxury rail, teetering around high-altitude curves and pounding through the ice of a dead world. Helmed by South Korea’s Bong Joon-ho (The Host), the movie gets at a kind of daring, giddy excitement that Hollywood has largely lost.
Fading Gigolo (2013) If you’ve missed the fumbling Woody Allen of Broadway Danny Rose, that guy is back. But John Turturro, writing and directing, has a more sensual NYC indie in mind.
