Robben Island Museum review 3 Users say 2/5 Rate it

A symbol both of centuries of cruel oppression and the triumph of hope, Robben Island has become synonymous with the former leader of the free and democratic South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, who spent 18 years in its maximum security prison. For nearly 400 years the island served as a place of banishment - not just for supposed criminals but also for many other unwanted members of society, including lepers and the mentally ill. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999. The blinding-white limestone quarry, where political prisoners toiled away doing hard labour in the blazing heat, and Mandela's claustrophobic cell in the prison are but a few of the harrowing reminders of the injustices carried out during the apartheid era, and of the final defeat of the regime. Fascinating and inspirational, Robben Island is a must-visit.

Beware - Museum store rips off customers
I recently visited the Robben Island Museum and purchased one t-shirt at the souvenir shop. I was charged more than triple the cost of the item and didn’t notice until I returned home. Two of my travel companions and another man purchasing at the same time were also overcharged which I wasn’t aware of until after I had boarded the ferry back to Cape Town.
Be very weary of that store. Double check your purchases and receipts before you sign and try to get souvenirs from the mainland (where the same types of items are sold more cheaply) rather than the Robben Island Museum store as the likelihood of getting ripped off is high. The fact that several people had the same experience demonstrates that this is standard practice for the store.
Good luck

Good Day,

I am very keen on taking my team of 50 Community Lay Counselling Volunteers to enjoy and experience the gorgeous Robben Island. This will be a token to thank them for their hard work in 2013, and do some team building for 2014. Kindly advise what the price would be and what kind of packages are available.
