If you haven't yet heard of A Bathing Ape—the Japanese fashion brand that was founded back in 1993 but has gained a cult following on this side of the Atlantic thanks, in large part, to the company's unofficial ambassador, Pharrell—it's time you acquaint yourself with its various offerings.

Time Out Chicago can officially report that BAPE, as the brand is often referred to, will open its first Chicago-area store, its fifth in the U.S. overall, at 113 E Oak Street in the Gold Coast some time soon.

Although the storefront does not yet boast specific signage, a mere walk by the address will put you face to face with the brand's signature logo and camo print alongside an "opening soon" message.

According to a 2023 building permit application, the owners of the space have requested to carry forward interior alterations to the two-story commercial building with basement "for a new BAPE retail store to include new flooring, walls, ceiling, lighting HVAC, plumbing and fire protection as per plans."

A bit of history: Clearly here to stay given its 30-year legacy, the brand was founded by one Tomoaki Nagao (Nigo), selling streetwear to men, women and children.

Today, many celebrities don the unique sweaters, shoes, hats and more that the company produces to much fanfare, as well a slew of lifestyle items that raise eyebrows but still sell out (think toilet paper, condoms, duct tape, fishing lures, cosmetics and paper weights, among others). BAPE also frequently collaborates with other brands and artists like The Weeknd, KAWS and Lil' Wayne.

Despite having over 30 stores globally, BAPE currently operates only four brick-and-mortars in the U.S.: two in New York, one in Los Angeles and another in Miami, making this upcoming Chicago location that much more special and exclusive.
