Standing nobly at the top of the hill overlooking the village of Dalkey, the Fitzpatrick is a regal-looking place that does indeed look like a castle. Actually, it's a crenellated manor house, but no less impressive for it: guest rooms are decked out in a kind of country chic (some with truly extraordinary sea views), and the rambling old lounge is a joy, filled with lots of sofas, pianos and working fireplaces. The elegant 20-metre indoor swimming pool is handy, and there's a decent basement restaurant, the Dungeon (naturally), and a more expensive formal restaurant upstairs for fine dining; the Library bar is lively and attractive with a wine and cocktail menu to please drinkers. Fitzpatrick also offers long-stay apartments.
