You might’ve noticed Johnson’s beautifully carved and gilded redwood organ screen on recent visits to the Huntington. Now, for the first time in four decades, you can see it paired with other pieces he created for the California School for the Blind in Berkeley, California, including a room full of other remarkable wood friezes that accompanied it. You’ll also find plenty of other examples of Johnson’s—an overlooked West Coast link in the Harlem Renaissance—extraordinary sculpture work, including his busts that borrowed from both modernism and traditional African masks and his Assyrian-meets-Art Deco athletics-inspired relief created for a Bay Area school.
