Catch a double feature of Director Kaneto Shindô's '60s Japanese horror films, as part of American Cinematheque's spooky October "Beyond Fest 2013." Shindô holds up as a master at inserting supernatural horror into his war-plagued Japanese backdrop. In Onibaba, a poor mother and daughter-in-law earn their living by killing samurai and selliing their effects, while Kuroneko (Black Cats) finds a pair of mother and daughter-in-law evil, demonic ghosts (Shindô must have had problems with the women in his life) tearing out the throats of roaming samurai, who just can't seem to catch a break.
