Totally unreconstructed, La Venencia is gloriously shabby, with old, peeling sherry posters, barrels behind the bar and walls burnished gold by decades of tobacco smoke. It serves only sherry (locals will order a crisp, dry fino or manzanilla, leaving the sweet stuff to the occasional tourist that stumbles in here), along with manchego cheese, cecina (air-dried beef) and chorizo by way of tapas. Orders are still chalked up on the bar, and an enamel sign asks customers not to spit on the floor.

If you have the chance to spend time here and do not , that will be your loss. A mix of local regulars and tourists with the tourists being quietly encouraged to fit in with the local ways. The hospitality is low key but attentive and generous. A few quiet drinks here is a great start to a night in Madrid.Try the ancho. One of the highlights of our stay.
