Famous for being Ernest Hemingway's daily haunt (his table, should you be wondering, is the one in the near right-hand corner). The decor is fin-de-siècle German bierkeller, with dusty old paintings and dark wood. The tapas can be uninspired and the waiters are unfailingly gruff, but for many this will be an essential stop.

I first went here for my Hemingway fix (April 2012), and then kept returning. I was by myself and the bar staff was most courteous and welcoming. I went back several more times for vino blanco (sometimes tinto) and tapas and thoroughly enjoyed myself. On one occasion when they were especially crowded, the head bartender and a space cleared for me. The Plaza de Santa Ana area is a favorite. Long may it remain!

Go there for the Hemingway fix, stay for the ensaladita russa. Yes, I eat that dish each time I visit. Creamy mayo on starchy, crumbly potatoes with various veggies and egg to diversify its crunch and texture. Very nice if you are a fan of such humble productions. Wash it down with a large vermouth con gin. Try not to stare at the posing freak sitting at the Hemingway table drowning his angst.

i use to hang out at the cerveceria in 1966 when it was still a dive, but an essential dive for ex pats, quite runyonesque, and of course we all pretended not to know that it was a Hemingway favorite, great place to be seen reading Ferlinghetti or any of the other beat poets
