Observatoire de Nice

Observatoire de Nice review Rate it

It's a fair old schlep to the summit of Mont Gros but this world-renowned observatory and architectural treasure is well worth the journey. Designed and engineered by the dynamic duo of Charles Garnier and Gustav Eiffel, the campus of 15 buildings is distributed around sprawling mountaintop grounds. It is now, first and foremost, an academic institution, joined with similar facilities across the world in ambitious projects of stellar research. However, guided tours do take place once a week, departing from the observatory's main entrance: the 'astronomy tour' comprises a complete tour of the facility, including the enormous 18-metre (59-foot) lens; the 'nature tour' takes in the impressive array of flora and fauna in the surrounding parkland.
