It would take quite a leap of the imagination to place this hotel's most famous former guest, Henri Matisse, among the sleek, architect-led design of its modern incarnation. Little from the artist's era remains after a comprehensive 2004 refurb launched Beau Rivage into the ranks of design accommodation, where it is now firmly rooted. A slightly Zen aesthetic (think artfully distributed piles of pebbles and plenty of natural light) permeates the public areas, while the similarly contemporary but somehow quite cosy rooms are characterised by neutral colour schemes, crisp bed linen, elegant shutters and porthole light fittings. The hotel has its own beach (with an attendant restaurant) but, being a few streets back from the prom, its views extend only as far as the old town's rooftops.
