Demarcating the eastern end of cours Saleya, this splendid townhouse is where Matisse spent the second half of the 1920s and early '30s, conducting his life and work on the third and fourth floors. The building itself (tall, elegant, the colour of wet sand on a sunny day) shows no evidence of its famous tenant (you'll not find a museum or even a commemorative plaque) and it is not open to the public, but it is more or less unchanged since the time of the artist's stay here.
