With a content as deliberately minimal as the architecture of the building that houses it (a wonderfully light, white marble edifice designed by Kenzo Tange), this fascinating collection is a delight to explore. Divided into geographical and historical slices of Asian and Indian history, the museum's exhibits have been carefully selected by a team of knowledgeable curators. Each exhibition space contains only a handful of artefacts (ornate mouldings from a temple, perhaps, an intricate fan or a splendid kimono), the intention being to prevent visitors from reaching saturation point too quickly. And it works. It is easy to linger in the imaginatively organised exhibition spaces, appreciating not only the objects in front of you but also how they have been positioned in the room. The equally beautiful café also offers traditional tea ceremonies on various days - call or consult the website for details.
