The State Opera (originally the German Theatre) opened in 1887, and was regarded as one of the finest German opera houses outside Germany until World War II. After the war, it changed its name to the Smetana Theatre, and became an outpost of the National Theatre; today, it's a separate organisation, and presents consistently bold contemporary opera alongside standards from the Italian, German, French and Russian repertoires.
