Next to the Estates, the State Opera offers the second most dazzling theatre interior in Prague, which will come in handy when you want to avert your eyes from the stage. The quality of the work here is similar to the National, and the misses really will have you counting the cupids and caryatides. Just as at the National, the ballet bills are the strongest, particularly those geared towards children. Programmes are available in English.

Best place to find Italian opera performances in the city but screen translation may only be into Czech (unlike the National where most are translated into English on the scrolling reader). I've seen Carmen here a couple of times as well. Definitely worth forking out for stalls seats as the view of the stage and surrounding balconies is fantastic. Early in the season (Oct/Nov) it's not unusual for most men to be in black tie for the premieres. Inside tip courtesy of
