When to go to Vancouver

Vancouver's weather, climate, festivals, events and public holidays

By Rebecca Tay

Winters are mild in the city but Vancouver's close proximity to Grouse Mountain (20 minutes from downtown) makes it an ideal base from which to enjoy winter sports. Whistler is only 100km (60 miles) further north. For those who enjoy the sunshine, the summer months will give you ample opportunity to get a tan on one of the many beaches that line the Vancouver shoreline.

Weather & climate

In contrast to most of the rest of Canada, Vancouver enjoys a temperate climate not unlike that of the UK. Owing to the ameliorating effect of the surrounding sea, winters are never that cold and summers are rarely oppressively hot. The only climatic drawback to the city is the rainfall, particularly in the winter months. From October through February the average monthly rainfall ranges from 115mm/4.5 inches to 167mm/6.5 inches and it's been known to rain for 29 days without respite.

Festivals & events

Vancouver's established festivals are impressive international affairs, but locals are just as enthusiastic about celebrating their city's cultural diversity – and they do so at any given opportunity, any time of the year. Summer is a particularly event-heavy season, which includes the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Canada Day, the Vancouver Pride Parade.
