Located in the heart of downtown, the Commodore is the music scene's crown jewel. Having recently celebrated its 75th birthday, the 900-capacity venue has a renowned history and has staged early career shows by seminal bands such as Talking Heads, the Clash and Nirvana. As such, its closure for two years in the '90s marked the darkest hour for live music in the city. After a $3.5m makeover, it was relaunched in 1999, although the redevelopment robbed the art deco room of some of its charm. Nevertheless, it remains the principal destination for all varieties of high-calibre touring acts and rightfully so. The room's sound system is excellent and its layout offers an abundance of vantage points. Limited table seating with food service can be pre-booked.
