The clue is in the word 'palace' - which is not, in this case, pretentious hyperbole. The Alvear, which fills half a block of BA's most exclusive street, Avenida Alvear, reeks of old-school class, and it's perhaps the grandest hotel in all of the capital. The 210 rooms - 100 of which are suites - include antique French furniture and Hermès bathroom goodies scattered around the jacuzzis. A buffet lunch or afternoon tea in the bird-cage-like La Orangerie bar and terrace is the best way for non-guests to soak up the hotel's ambience.
