Opened in 2005, this thoughtfully restored 1820s home is nestled on a back street behind a plain wooden door, and a buzz-to-enter policy adds to the sense of sanctuary. Beyond the ivy-clad courtyard and its 200-year-old fig tree are 11 suites, each with individual quirks - a spiral iron staircase in one, a clawfoot bathtub in another - and each boasting lovely design touches such as high bare-brick ceilings, original mosaic flooring and restored period furniture and furnishings.
