Astronaut captures photo of Chicago, aurora borealis from space

American astronaut Scott Kelly is in the middle of a yearlong mission aboard the International Space Station, accompanied only by Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. He's spent a good amount of his time in orbit creating a spectacular Instagram account filled with photos of Earth from space. In September, he managed to capture a photo of Soldier Field shortly before the Bears were walloped by the Packers in the opening game of the season. He upped that ante over the weekend with a stunning nighttime shot of Chicago with the aurora borealis looming to the north.

Kelly and Kornienko's 12-month mission aboard ISS is intended to help better understand how the human body reacts to long stints in space. The study will presumably also reveal how many disagreements a Russian and an American can have over the course of a year while locked in a pressurized box.

You can expect plenty more photos of Chicago (as well as other cities across the globe) from space during the rest of the pair's mission. ISS travels in orbit at a speed of roughly 17,150 miles per hour, which means it makes a lap around Earth every 92 minutes.
