Though the single was released in 2013, along with the debut album on which it appears, Talking Dreams, "Cool Kids" has become a sleeper pop–rock crossver hit more than year later. Thus the L.A.–based sibling quartet Echosmith has become popular with the type of crowd the protagonist in "Cool Kids" laments not being a part of. Oh, irony, you magnificent bastard.
