Eataly (43 E Ohio Ave, 312-321-5944, eataly.com) opened this month and immediately elevated Chicago's Italian food scene. With dozens of eateries, a wine bar and a brewery, and a Nutella bar, Eataly ensures you'll eat very well. But as home cooks, we're also excited about the shops, which sell meats, cheeses, fresh pasta and imported Italian goods we previously didn't have access to.

Bad Wolf Coffee, a Dr. Who-themed coffee shop, opened this summer.

It was a very good year in the Chicago food world. While we lost some favorites along the way—Great LakeCity ProvisionsWest Town TavernSprout and the Tasting Room closed, and Ina's closes on December 31—we had even more great openings. Before we start though, here's a caveat—since we wait to visit brand-new restaurants, we can't include very recent openings. And since one particular noteworthy restaurant opened in December 2012 (Grace), but was reviewed in 2013, we've included it here. And so, from a splashy new tiki bar and a vast Italian megastore, these are 2013's best restaurants in Chicago, and the bars that wowed us.
